Absolutely great. It explains the problems I am facing in the Pacific NW with C3/C4 grasses and highly tasty prairie plants in a land of slugs and voles. It mentions plants more likely to survive and what regions of the world I should look toward for these plants. This is the first book I have read that clearly explains meadows building beyond the physical steps of clearing, digging, and sowing. Most books limit themselves to meadows in the midwest and maybe the east, but this is far, far more inclusive. It is complex enough that I am still finding new information especially in charts after reading it several times.Hitchmough prefers meadows which include but are not limited to natives since he feels the public will appreciate a more attractive meadow than most natives can provide. However, the information on changing light conditions, plant attributes, and soil differences make this book appropriate for any gardener. My first impressions are that this is a great and necessary book. I've only read the first chapter and paged through some of the rest, but I've found it rewarding. I appreciate the author's critical defense of his use of non-natives, and I am sympathetic especially in more urban environments -- the basis of his argument is that you have to cater to people's aesthetics in order for somewhat unruly meadows to be approved. Here in Boise, Idaho the idea of using anything but lawn in our public parks or private subdivisions has barely caught on, so even a 'non-native' meadow of pollinator and insect benefiting plants would be a huge step in a more ecologically (and to me, aesthetically) aligned land use. He does push the argument a little too far for me, however, though perhaps as a response to strident 'native' arguments. For example, he defines what is native by political rather than ecological boundary (though granted, the latter ambiguous), which provides an easy straw man that 'native' is largely arbitrary. And, to some extent he diminishes the arguments against exotics by suggesting they have limited scope -- here in the arid West we have vast and widespread destruction, largely unnoticed by the ecologically naive, due to non-native cheatgrass (though in fairness, that was not a fault of gardeners). But again, I appreciate the rational discussion as l am attempting to create both native and non-native meadows.I am excited to look at the technical aspects of sowing rather than planting, and the structural logic that he has developed. I hope there will be significant information on xeric techniques, though the author's primary locations are in the UK.I don't buy many books anymore, but this seems a great one to have at hand.
